Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-invasive and safe rejuvenation treatment because it is autologous — meaning it uses blood plasma from your own body to rejuvenate the skin. This is why it is sometimes called a “vampire facelift” but it is not a surgical facelift in the true sense of the word. It is a much less invasive procedure wherein the plasma is enriched with platelets – blood cells whose function is to promote faster healing with less swelling and bruising.
The platelets in PRP are nutrient-rich cells that stimulate the regeneration of the underlying structural integrity of your skin. These growth factors work to stimulate the release of the skin’s own stem cells encouraging the skin to create new blood vessels, stimulate new collagen growth, and grow new skin cells.
- Sun damaged skin or sun spots
- Wrinkles, fine lines, scars on the face, neck, and hands
- Crepey or sagging skin due to aging
- Crow’s feet or dark circles under the eyes
- Dull, rough, or sallow skin tone and texture
- Acne scarring
PRP therapy takes approximately 90 minutes including preparation, treatment, and recovery time. The treatment is typically performed during an office visit with no need for a hospital stay.
First, your provider will cleanse and prepare the area to be treated. Next, a small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm — about the same amount drawn during a standard blood test.
Your blood is then placed in a machine called a ‘centrifuge’ for approximately 5 minutes. The centrifuge separates the platelets out from the rest of your blood. The resulting nutrient-rich plasma is then activated with calcium chloride to release growth factors that will increase collagen production and catalyze other healing effects.
If necessary, your provider will apply a topical numbing cream to ensure minimal discomfort during your treatment.
The plasma will then be applied directly to your skin via microneedling.
At our clinic we use a powerful combination of PRP and microneedling to ensure maximum penetration. This is because the microneedling gives the skin an added stimulus to boost collagen production along with the use of the nutrient-rich platelets — making for an optimum result. Read more about microneedling here.
Recovery time varies but typically it takes 2-3 days to return to social activities, with optimal results being evident within 5-6 weeks.
It is recommended to avoid wearing makeup for a few days after the procedure. Your skin will be regenerating new skin cell growth so it will need extra protection from sun.
Avoid sun exposure for at least one month after treatment — even in winter or in a cold climate. Wear a broad-spectrum sunblock with a minimum SPF of 30. The primary active ingredients of your sunblock should include zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
You will be provided with an aftercare program that includes recommended sun protection products and skincare tips.
