What is SKINVIVE™?

SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® is an FDA-approved injectable that uses microdroplets of hyaluronic acid to temporarily improve skin hydration. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced in the body. It attracts water molecules and provides hydration to the skin, eyes, and joints. Natural aging leads to decreased levels of hyaluronic acid, which causes the skin to become dehydrated. Fine lines and wrinkles become more noticeable, the skin loses elasticity, and its complexion will appear duller.

“That’s a very challenging question. I think what I would say if I were stranded on a desert island, I would hope I had my sunblock with me. Um, so that would probably be my number one. But of course, we can’t live without everything else we use, but that is a critical component. Everybody needs to wear sunblock. Um, and you know, there’s a lot of opportunity. Like sunblock itself is evolving now, so you always want to be looking at something that has titanium or zinc, something that, you know, SPF 30 is a great way, and it doesn’t have to be 100, but 30 is great, 30 to 50. Um, and then something you wear every day. You know, we also have powder sunblocks that are lighter in texture and easier to reapply. They’re great for active people. So, I think sunblock is a crucial point, and I really work with my patients on that because it can prevent them from having to see me for lots of other reasons.

Um, but then again, I’m a huge proponent, you know, fan of retinoids, vitamin C’s, you know, just a few key pieces. I don’t like making people’s skincare regimens really complicated, but I like to have a few key great products in there. And also, for addressing acne or rosacea or, you know, other melasma, you know, of course, there’s a whole system of products and things we have to do for that.”

What is the most crucial skincare product?

“So, when it comes to self-care, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the multitude of products flooding our way, especially on platforms like Instagram. However, she simplifies things by identifying quality products. It’s as straightforward as using vitamin C in the morning, followed by a retinol-based product in the evening, a high-quality sunscreen, and a good moisturizer. Instead of constantly searching for the beauty Holy Grail, she emphasizes the simplicity and fundamentals. She doesn’t try to sell you anything; she just offers valuable guidance.

Navigating skincare can be quite the challenge for teenagers these days, given the barrage of TikTok videos and product campaigns. She keeps it simple and practical, which is a great value. Despite initial concerns about the cost of the vitamin C product, she provided precise instructions, and it turned out to be the best value I’ve ever had, lasting longer than expected.

How Does SKINVIVE™ Work?

SKINVIVE™ can be used on the face, neck, decolletage, and hands to replenish hyaluronic acid and rejuvenate glowing, healthy skin. Injections of tiny hyaluronic acid molecules draw water into the treated skin to rehydrate it from within. Hydration brightens and softens dull skin while subtly plumping the skin to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. The injected hyaluronic acid molecules are also crosslinked, which makes it more difficult for the body to break down and allows the skin to retain its moisture. This means patients can enjoy their newly hydrated skin and youthful glow for several months after a SKINVIVE™ treatment.

Who is Not a Good Candidate for SKINVIVE™?

Most patients are good candidates for SKINVIVE™, but there are a few factors to take into consideration. Patients should be in overall good health without a history of allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid fillers or lidocaine (a numbing agent used in the SKINVIVE™ product). Patients must wait to receive treatment if they are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before your treatment, it is helpful to have realistic expectations about the results you can expect. SKINVIVE™ is designed to brighten and hydrate the skin. If you desire a more dramatic plumping effect to reshape the face and improve deep wrinkles and facial folds, dermal fillers can be a great addition to your SKINVIVE™ treatment.

The SKINVIVE™ Procedure

The SKINVIVE™ procedure is relatively simple and only takes about 15-30 minutes. Because lidocaine is an ingredient in SKINVIVE™, you shouldn’t need any topical anesthetic beforehand. Your provider will start by cleaning the treatment area. Next, they will inject the hyaluronic acid formula into specific points along the treatment area. These injections are made superficially in the skin, not in the deep layers like other dermal fillers. Once the treatment is done, you can go home or back to work immediately.

Most patients will receive a treatment plan of three sessions scheduled 2-4 weeks apart. Improvements in skin tone and texture will become more noticeable after each treatment, with the most significant results being seen after your last treatment. After your initial series of treatments, we recommend a maintenance treatment every 4-6 months to maintain your glowing, youthful complexion.

Are There Any Side Effects?

After treatment, you may notice some redness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness. These side effects should diminish on their own within a week, and discomfort can be alleviated with ice packs and ibuprofen. During the first 24 hours following treatment, you’ll want to avoid strenuous exercise, exposure to excess heat or sun, and alcohol.
