Lip Rejuvenation Techniques – Overview

There are many ways to rejuvenate your lips. Depending on your lip shape and desired result, you may need just one of the following treatments or several to get the look you want. Your plastic surgeon and his team can help you decide which treatment is right for you for a positive and natural-looking result. They will outline all your options and explain the full implications of each procedure in detail.

Lip Augmentation using Restylane® Dermal Filler

Lip augmentation is an ideal solution for increasing lip volume and reducing lip wrinkles and fine lines. Augmentation is a non-surgical procedure that works to “plump” and augment the lips using an injectable dermal filler to rejuvenate their appearance. We use and recommend Restylane® because we believe it has the most consistent results. Restylane® improves the appearance of your lips by boosting volume, improving the structure and most critically, improving overall lip shape.

Lip Augmentation using Fat Transfer

Lip augmentation may also be performed by using a process known as a fat transfer; wherein your plastic surgeon will harvest your body’s own fat – usually from the abdominal area. The fat is then prepared and injected into your lips at several insertion points to create fuller and plumper lips. Fat transfer for lips is very popular because it uses your body’s own fat rather than any artificial or foreign material that is grown in a lab. Artificial fillers are often re-absorbed by the body and necessitate frequent repeat injections. Fat transfer has permanent results for most people who elect the treatment.

Upper Lip Lift or Lip Reduction

A lip lift or lip reduction is performed on people who feel that their upper or lower lips are disproportionate or too large. A lip lift or reduction may also improve overall facial appearance by revealing more of the upper teeth when smiling – contributing to a younger and more rejuvenated look. An upper lip lift involves an incision under the base of the nose and the removal of a section of skin and lifting the skin upwards. The incisions are hidden in natural creases beneath the nostrils, leaving no obvious scarring. Lifting the skin upwards increases the amount of visible pink lip, exposing the teeth more, and giving you fuller, and more youthful-looking lips without any plumping. Whereas, a lower lip reduction procedure involves creating a horizontal incision on the inside of the lip and removing excess tissue and fat before suturing. Either of these procedures can be combined with other surgical procedures, including lip augmentation and rhinoplasty (nasal surgery).

Perioral Dermabrasion Alleviates Wrinkles Around the Mouth

Due to the effects of aging, sun exposure or cigarette smoking, fine lines and wrinkles may appear around the mouth. These lines are usually called “lipstick lines” or “smoker’s lips” because of the way they radiate out from the lips and into the surrounding skin. Perioral Dermabrasion lessens the appearance of these lines to create a youthful appearance by literally removing several layers of skin to stimulate collagen production resulting in a permanent improvement of skin texture and lessening of deep lines.

Botox® and Dysport® for Smile Lines

Botox® and Dysport® are both very popular treatments for facial wrinkles and smile lines – for a good reason: they are safe, effective and long-lasting. When injected with the correct skill and artistry, the treatment results in a very natural-looking result so others won’t know you have had “work done”. Both treatments are very safe and ideal for treating lines around the lips because they block the nerve impulses thereby relaxing the muscle that is causing the wrinkle. The level of treatment is also easier control so that you will still be able to smile naturally without appearing “frozen” or without emotion. Read more about Botox® here.
