Dermal fillers such as Restylane®, Restylane® Lyft, Juvederm®, Voluma®, and Belotero® are composed of a stabilized form of hyaluronic acid (HA) – a substance that occurs naturally in your own body. Dermal fillers work by restoring volume or “fullness” in the face, reducing fine or deep lines, filling out hollows in the cheeks, under the eyes, temple, lips, and forehead.
Typically the main reason to repeat a dermal filler treatment is that the initial treatment has simply worn off over time. Most dermal fillers last between 6-12 months or maybe longer, depending on the facial area treated. Fillers placed in the lips tend to last an average of 6 months or so, while filler placed in the hands, the under-eye area, or temple region may last up to a year or more. However, sometimes the filler may be placed in the wrong location, or an overabundance of filler is used, making the appearance of the treated area appear puffy or out of proportion to other facial features. Negative results such as these typically occur when the product has been placed by an inexperienced or inadequately trained provider.
The good news is that all dermal fillers are reversible. This means that you don’t need to wait weeks or months to reverse the previous procedure. The dermal filler can be dissolved and placed in a more appropriate anatomical location. You do not need to wait until the previous filler has been resorbed to have a correction or revision procedure performed.
As with any surgical, or non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedure, dermal skin fillers must be placed by a fully qualified and trained aesthetic professional. The successful outcome of your dermal filler treatment will be directly in related to the skill and precision of your provider’s injection technique and keen eye for facial aesthetic balance. Additionally, the safety of fillers is greatly increased if the aesthetic professional is practicing under the current consensus guidelines provided by professional Plastic Surgery and Dermatology associations.
