Feminizing Lip Reshaping: Upper Lip Lift, Lip Augmentation and Corner of the Mouth Lift
Feminizing the Male Lips
The position, shape, and size of lips on men and women are typically different. Men’s lips tend to be thinner than women’s lips. Fuller lips are associated with a more feminine look.
Also, the distance between the opening of the mouth and the base of the nose is usually longer in men, causing the male lip to appear “flatter” and thinner. Whereas the female lip is usually higher and closer to the base of the nose and fuller in appearance, with the upper teeth slightly exposed.
Lip Feminization: 3 Procedures
Feminizing the lips involves several options for procedures – or all three – depending on your features, age, or desired outcome:
- Lip Lift (Upper Lip Reduction): lifting the upper lip to a more feminine and youthful position to improve the visibility of upper teeth.
- Lip Augmentation (Lip Filling): filling the lips so they appear fuller and more feminine. Lip Augmentation can be done either through the use of injectable fillers or fat transfer injection using your own tissue – the most natural way.
- Corner of Mouth Lift: Often less of the red part of the lips shows near the corners of the mouth so the Corner of Mouth Lift is done to improve the ratio of the natural “sweep” of the lips and increase the visibility of the red portion.
How does a Lip Lift and/or a Corner of the Mouth Lift, help make the lips appear more feminine?
A Lip Lift makes the lips – and the entire face – look more feminine by shortening the upper lip, improving the visibility of the upper teeth, and creating a more youthful appearance. Yet, it does not address the subtle “sweep” of the corners of your mouth.
Some patients find that in addition to a Lip Lift they also want a more “uplifted” look, a more pleasant expression when the facial muscles are at rest. The Corner of Mouth Lift focuses exclusively on lifting the corners of your mouth and does not affect lip movement, which is necessary for expressing a full range of emotions. Note that while this technique is different to the Lip Lift procedure – which focuses solely on reducing the length of the space between the upper lip and the base of your nose – it may done at the same time depending on your desired outcome.
Often, depending on your features, a Lip Lift will be sufficient to create more feminine, natural looking lips. A Lip Lift is also a longer-lasting and more permanent solution than simply adding lip fillers onto the male lip.
How is a Lip Lift performed?
A feminizing Lip Lift is usually included in the set of procedures that comprise Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS). As a long format surgery, FFS takes 10-12 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
An incision is usually made under the base of your nose and a section of skin is removed. When the gap is closed, the top lip is lifted enough to expose a little more of your upper teeth. The incision is hidden in natural creases just beneath the nostrils, leaving no obvious scarring.
Along with a Lip Lift, and/or Corner of Mouth Lift, depending on your desired outcome, you may also want to augment the lips via Lip Filling.
How does Lip Filling (Lip Augmentation) help to feminize the lips?
Women often have fuller lips than men, and fuller lips are a symbol of femininity and beauty, so filling out the lips is often used in Facial Feminization. Augmentation or filling of the lips can be done a number of different ways. One of the most natural ways is to use some of your own fatty tissue to augment the lips via Fat Transfer Injection or through the use of injectable fillers such as Restylane®, Restylane Silk.
How will I know which procedure is necessary to feminize my lips?
There are several ways to plump and feminize the appearance of your lips. Your surgeon will outline your options and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure. You may need several procedures depending on your desired result and existing facial features.
