Perioperative Estrogen Hormonal Therapy Does Not Increase Venous Thromboembolism Risk in Facial Feminization Surgery

Published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2024, this study by Li, Park, Fick, Ousterhout, and Deschamps-Braly examined whether continuing feminizing hormone therapy around the time of facial feminization surgery increases the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), or blood clots. Stopping hormones before surgery often causes unpleasant side effects and can worsen gender dysphoria.

The researchers conducted a 38-year retrospective review within the two-surgeon practice of Dr. Ousterhout and Dr. Deschamps-Braly. Of the 953 patients who met inclusion criteria, one (0.10 percent) was diagnosed with a VTE after surgery, a rate comparable to similar cosmetic and jaw procedures. The authors concluded it is reasonable to continue these medications through surgery. The study draws directly on facial feminization patients treated at the Deschamps-Braly Clinic.
