Lip Rejuvenation & Enhancement

Overview of Lip Rejuvenation Techniques

There are many ways to rejuvenate your lips. Depending on your lip shape and desired result, you may need just one of the following treatments or several to get the look you want. Your plastic surgeon and his team can help you decide which treatment is right for you for a positive and natural-looking result. They will outline all your options and explain the full implications of each procedure in detail.

Lip Augmentation using Restylane® Dermal Filler

Lip augmentation is a non-surgical procedure that works to plump and “augment” the lips using injectable dermal fillers to improve their appearance. Augmentation increases lip volume and reduces lip wrinkles and fine lines. The safest and longest-lasting substance for injecting into the lips is hyaluronic acid – a natural substance already found in your body. There are several hyaluronic acid products on the market today, we use and recommend Restylane® because we believe it has the most consistent results.

The hyaluronic acid improves the appearance of your lips by boosting volume, improving lip structure, and most critically, overall lip shape. It is critical to have a skilled plastic surgeon, his physician’s assistant, or cosmetic nurse inject the substance – to ensure a natural-looking result that is in overall harmony with your existing facial features.

Surgical Lip Augmentation using Dermal Fat Grafts (Fat Transfer)

The lips may also be augmented using dermal fat graphs (A.K.A. autologous fat transplantation or micro-liposuction) wherein your plastic surgeon will harvest your body’s own fat – usually from the abdomen. The fat is then prepared and injected into your lip with a needle at several insertion points to create fuller and plumper lips.

Fat grafting for lips is very popular because it uses your body’s own fat rather than any artificial or foreign material that is grown in a lab. Artificial fillers are often re-absorbed by the body and necessitate frequent repeat injections. They may also feel unnatural and can sometimes be seen through the skin, whereas dermal fat grafts have permanent results in most people who elect the treatment.

Lip Lift or Lip Reduction

A lip lift or lip reduction is performed on people who feel that their upper or lower lips are disproportionate or too large. A lip lift or reduction may also improve overall facial appearance by revealing more of the upper teeth when smiling – contributing to a younger and more rejuvenated look.

A lip lift can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the extent of the procedure and your comfort level. The procedure involves an incision under the base of the nose and the removal of a section of skin. The incisions are hidden in natural creases beneath the nostrils, leaving no obvious scarring.

A lower lip reduction procedure involves creating a horizontal incision on the inside of the lip and removing excess tissue and fat before suturing.

Either of these procedures can be combined with other surgical procedures, including lip augmentation and rhinoplasty (nasal surgery).

Perioral Dermabrasion Alleviates Wrinkles Around the Mouth

Due to the effects of aging, sun exposure or cigarette smoking, fine lines and wrinkles may appear around the mouth. These lines are usually called “lipstick lines”or “smoker’s lips” because of the way they radiate out from the lips and into the surrounding skin.

Perioral Dermabrasion lessens the appearance of these lines to create a youthful appearance by literally removing several layers of skin to stimulate collagen production resulting in a permanent improvement of skin texture and lessening of deep lines.

Your plastic surgeon, his physician’s assistant or cosmetic nurse can perform the procedure in the operating room or occasionally as an in-office procedure. Perioral Dermabrasion is performed under a local anesthetic although is often combined with other surgical procedures, and any post-treatment pain or discomfort can be treated with non-prescription pain medication such as Tylenol or Aleve.

The skin around your mouth will take 7-10 days to heal and you will notice an immediate visible improvement. Some redness may remain but this fades over the next few weeks leaving you with smoother and younger looking skin around the lips.

Botox® for Smile Lines

Botox® is a very popular treatment for facial wrinkles and smile lines – for a good reason: it’s safe, effective and long-lasting. When Botox® is injected with the correct skill and artistry, it results in a very natural-looking result so others won’t know you have had “work done”.

Botox® is a very safe treatment and ideal for treating lines around the lips because it blocks the nerve impulses thereby relaxing the muscle that is causing the wrinkle. The level of treatment is also easier control so that you will still be able to smile naturally without appearing “frozen” or without emotion.

The real skill of injecting Botox® is the critical component to enhancing your own natural beauty. Our work embraces the clinical precision of a medical professional and also the aesthetic “eye” of the artist who is sensitive to your existing facial features to achieve a truly beautiful result. Read more about Botox® here.
